Part-Time / On-Call EFD Laborer-Ice Center, $10.50/ Hour.  This part-time on-call position assists in the operation of the Ice Center by performing work required in setting/tearing down of events, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, etc.  Some heavy manual labor is involved.  This position is Part-Time, On-Call, with NO guarantee of hours, with various hours including nights & weekends.  Must reside in IOWA, within 10 miles of the City limits.    Applications will be taken until positions filled.

Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under general direction of facilities management staff, performs general manual work in the maintenance and operation of the Events Facilities Department properties. Requires skill in the performance of unskilled and semiskilled tasks of a physically demanding nature. May have some heavy manual labor involved. As work experience is gained, employee of this class may be assigned to somewhat more difficult and responsible tasks, especially in the area of building maintenance, repair and cleaning procedures. Employee in this class work with and around and operate various pieces of machinery such as a genie lift, power scrubber, floor buffer, lawn maintenance equipment. Work normally is performed under close supervision; however, constant supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned; work is frequently intermittent and on weekends and in the evening and night hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION (with or without accommodation)

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Sets chairs, tables and other Events Facilities Department equipment.
  • May do manual work such as snow removal off the sidewalks, clean windows.
  • Some painting.
  • Cleans and re-stocks restrooms.
  • Maintains glass by cleaning.
  • May make light repairs to specific equipment.
  • Cleans rugs with machinery.
  • May erect traffic barricades.
  • Waters, fertilizes, cultivates, and trims lawns, shrubs, flowers and trees.
  • Assists skilled workers in maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds and equipment.
  • May unload stone, gravel, asphalt and other materials.
  • Maintains floors, such as applying waxes sealants, and chemical strippers.
  • Performs other related manual tasks in the operation and maintenance of the Events Facilities Department properties.
  • Establishes and maintain effective working relationships with City Officials, other agencies, fellow employees and the general public.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours, may be called upon to work intermittently; must have the ability to work graveyard shifts and weekends.
  • Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Preferred Skills

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Experience in performing general manual work and preferably completion of a standard grade school course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

MINIMUM ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Abilities

The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with your body, arms, and/or legs. Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Job Knowledge

Knowledge of the uses of common hand tools and standard equipment used in the construction and maintenance work, particularly as applied to the specialized work to which assigned; general mechanical ability and ability to perform unskilled to semiskilled tasks in the construction and maintenance activities; ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous manual labor for extended periods, under varying weather conditions, and be able to stand on concrete for extended periods of time and be able to carry equipment up and down stairs.

Language Skills and Interpersonal Communication

Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal). Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and patrons; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions. 

Work Environment

Seventy-five percent of the duties are performed in a normal inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards other than those normally associated with general public contact, dust or odors. While performing twenty-five percent of the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic and caustic chemicals and the noise level is loud.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Iowa is required.
