Lifeguard I-Aquatics, $9.50/Hour. Employee will work as a lifeguard and swim lesson assistant at City swimming pools. Must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding Training, First Aid & CPR for the Professional Rescuer before the first day of work. Employees not guaranteed a minimum number of hours but will work less than 40 hours per week. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and Holidays. Employment will be between May 15, 2017 and end August 27, 2017. Must be 15 years old or older and have own transportation.

Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Acts as a Lifeguard at any of the City swimming pools; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THIS CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible for the safety of swimmers in the pool, on the deck and in the bathhouse. This is routine work, but requires a high degree of responsibility for the safety of swimmers and for assistance in emergency cases. Work is performed under the direction of a head guard or pool manager. Employee in this class performs cleaning work as required in the pool area.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)

  • Patrols and observes swimming pool areas, deck and bathhouse;
  • Performs rescues and utilizes his/her Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard training skills in both
  • routine and emergency situations;
  • Enforces pool rules and regulations for the safety and convenience of the public;
  • Assists in the cleaning and upkeep of the bathhouse, pool and deck, including, but not limited to,
  • cleaning restroom facilities, vacuuming or sweeping the pool, picking up trash and litter.
Preferred Skills

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, including recognizing distress and drowning situations; methods of assisting apparent drowning victims; knowledge of CPR and standard first aid, including use of rescue breathing mask; knowledge of laws and ordinances governing the conduct of persons at a swimming pool and their admittance; ability to communicate effectively and firmly with the public and their peers; react quickly and calmly in emergencies; excellent physical condition.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Experience as a Lifeguard is not required, but is preferred. Completion of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (R-94), Water Park Lifeguarding Module, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Standard First Aid, or equivalent, is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Provide photocopies of all current certificates; wear staff uniform while on duty; maintain a professional work standard and image; work the entire swim season; have transportation arrangements made to be able to work at any of the City's swimming pools. 

This is a part-time seasonal position, 40 hours of work per week are not guaranteed.
