Lifeguard II-Aquatics, $10.00/Hour. Employee will work as a lifeguard and swim lesson instructor at City swimming pools. Must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding Training, First Aid & CPR for the Professional Rescuer & Water Safety Instructor before the first day of work. Must teach both (2) sessions of lessons. Employees not guaranteed a minimum number of hours but will work less than 40 hours per week. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and Holidays.  Employment will be between May 15, 2017 and end August 27, 2017. Must be 16 years or older and have own transportation.

Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Acts as a Lifeguard at any of the City swimming pools; ensures the health, safety and enjoyment of the swimmers; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible for the safety of swimmers in the pool, on the deck, and in the bathhouse. The employee also assists in supervising the swimming pool and must have a vital concern for the safety of swimmers. This involves a high degree of responsibility for the safety of swimmers and for assistance in emergency cases. An employee in this class is responsible for teaching swimming lessons and must be present on all days of class.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)

  • Patrols and supervises all areas of the pool;
  • Assists in training Lifeguard I, if required to do so by the person in charge of the swimming pool;
  • Performs rescues and administers aid when necessary or required;
  • Enforces pool rules and regulations for the safety and convenience of the public;
  • Assists in cleaning the bathhouse, showers and restroom areas and facilities;
  • Teaches swimming lessons according to American Red Cross standards.
Preferred Skills

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Experienced knowledge of lifeguarding methods and techniques; knowledge of laws and ordinances governing the conduct of persons at a swimming pool; ability to meet and deal firmly and effectively with the public; act quickly and calmly in emergencies; excellent physical condition.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Some experience at the level of Lifeguard I, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; completion of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (R-94), Water Safety Instructor, Water Park Lifeguarding Module, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Standard First Aid, or equivalent, is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Provide photocopies of current certificates; wear staff uniform while on duty; maintain a professional work standard and image; work the entire swim season; teach the entire lesson schedule; have transportation arrangements made to be able to work at any of the City's swimming pools.

This position is a part-time seasonal position, 40 hours of work per week are not guaranteed.
